“In Search of Hidden Voices”

In Search of Hidden Voices explores the sound world of the baritone saxophone in dialogue with the piano. The program combines arrangements of classical works, contemporary compositions, and a newly written piece by Klara Mlakar, opening space for fresh interpretations and for expanding the instrument’s repertoire. Its distinctiveness lies in reimagining works not originally written for the saxophone; this shift offers a new perspective on familiar literature and reveals the “hidden voices” that emerge through this renewed sonic landscape.

The album’s guiding thread is twofold: a new sound identity for well-established works, and a conceptual framework that intertwines tradition with contemporary expression, placing both instruments in an equal chamber partnership. Although the selected pieces come from different stylistic periods, they naturally connect to form a cohesive whole. Saint-Saëns brings romantic clarity and classical form, Tansman a characteristic neoclassical language, Borodin expansive lyricism, while Sluka and Klara Mlakar anchor the album in a modern sound world with expressive freshness and immediacy.

The result is a unified musical narrative in which the baritone saxophone and piano emerge as equal voices, revealing the rich and often overlooked expressive potential of this instrument.
