Lan Meden is a classical saxophonist whose refined sound and interpretation shape his performances as both a soloist and chamber musician across Slovenia and abroad. About

Biography

Lan Meden began his musical education at the Fran Gerbič Music School in Cerknica and continued at the Ljubljana Conservatory of Music and Ballet in the class of Lev Pupis. After graduating from secondary school, he pursued undergraduate studies in saxophone at the Private University for Music and Art in Vienna with Michael Krenn, completing his degree with distinction in August 2022. In autumn 2020, he took part in an Erasmus exchange at the renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, studying with Joonatan Rautiola. In September 2025, he successfully completed his master’s degree in saxophone in the class of Miha Rogina at the University of Ljubljana Academy of Music. He has further refined his musical training in numerous masterclasses with distinguished professors such as C. Delangle, A. Bornkamp, V. David, L. Mlekusch, A. Fateyeva, D. Gauthier, the Signum Saxophone Quartet, and others.

He is the recipient of several national and international awards and recognitions, including TEMSIG (2016, 2022), Woodwind & Brass (Varaždin, 2016), and the European Saxophone Forum (Wrocław, 2017); in March 2018, he won second prize at TEMSIG as a member of Duo Prospero. As a member of the Philia Saxophone Quartet, he earned a performance in the Schubert Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus in the 2020/21 season by winning the Musica Juventutis competition. In February 2020, he recorded a studio archive session for Radio Ars (RTV Slovenia) with pianist Irén Seleljo. In July 2022, accompanied by Camerata Masaot Wien, he premiered the Concerto for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra by French composer Karol Beffa. In December 2023, he performed as a soloist with the Italian FVG Orchestra, presenting Frank Martin’s Ballade for saxophone and orchestra. As a member of the Ljubljana Saxophone Quartet, he won second prize and a gold plaque at the 2024 national TEMSIG competition. The quartet appears regularly at festivals and concert series across Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia (Festival Ljubljana, Nei Suoni dei Luoghi, Solo e da Camera, Glasbena mladina Slovenije, Festival Lent, Glasbena mladež Osijek). In February 2019, he received the Škerjanc Award of the Ljubljana Conservatory for outstanding academic achievement.

Lan Meden was for several years a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. Within the cultural association KD Sekvoja, he serves as one of the mentors of the SOS Youth Saxophone Orchestra. Together with pianist Sven Brajković, he performs regularly at various music festivals (Glasbena mladina Ljubljana, Festival Lent, Solo e da Camera).
